Brent Tarter, "On Equal Terms With Men"

In Commemoration of the Ratification and Adoption of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the Richmond Public Law Library is hosting a month long program of events, including the library’s Suffragists’ You Tube videos, memorabilia and book displays, showings of Woman’s Suffrage DVDs, music, talks, book signings, and more.

On August 26, 2021, Virginia historian Brent Tarter will deliver "On Equal Terms With Men," discussing Virginia's role in the Women's Suffrage Movement and why Virginia did not adopt the 19th Amendment until 1952. A Question and Answer session will follow his remarks. He will be available to sign two of his books, Virginians and Their Histories and The Woman's Suffrage Campaign in Virginia.

Brent Tarter is a retired historian and editor at the Library of Virginia, a founding editor of the Library's Dictionary of Virginia Biography project, the author of numerous articles in scholarly journals about Virginia history, and the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of sixteen books, including The Grandees of Government: The Origins and Persistence of Undemocratic Politics in Virginia; A Saga of the New South: Race, Law, and Public Debt in Virginia; and Gerrymanders: How Redistricting Has Protected Slavery, White Supremacy, and Partisan Minorities in Virginia.
