“HOW TO TELL YOUR STORY” MEMOIR WRITING WORKSHOP

Fully interactive, the hybrid “HOW TO TELL YOUR STORY” Memoir Writing Workshop will guide you into writing your own story. By the end of the 6th session, you will develop your story or a body of memoir work in the safety of a small cohort of writers. Participants will be asked to submit a two-page writing assignment each week. The participants will read their work aloud and receive feedback from their fellows. The feedback will be restricted to:

  1. I liked…
  2. I didn’t understand…
  3. I’d like to hear more about…

Veteran storyteller Gayle Turner will lead the Workshop. Co-leader Meldon Jenkins-Jones will function as an editor offering grammar, syntax, and structural input.

Participants will receive Gayle’s PowerPoint Thoughts on Crafting a Good Story as well as assorted articles addressing the peculiarities of memoir versus other writing forms.

Limited to 10 participants and the two co-leaders, this hybrid workshop will meet in person at West End Library and online on Zoom from 10:15 – 11:45 am EDT Tuesdays for 6 weeks beginning September 7, 2021 and concluding Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Free and Open to the Public, but participants must commit to attend all 6 sessions. Participants may attend in person or on Zoom.*

About the Co-Leaders:

Gayle Turner tells stories in print, online, on stage and screen. Whether delivered in writing or orally he believes stories are the currency of humanity and is convinced we live into the stories we tell ourselves. He gets particular pleasure out of helping people tell their stories well. He is Executive Producer of The Storytellers Channel.

Meldon Jenkins-Jones, a Senior Librarian at Richmond Public Library, was also a student of Kirsten Taranto’s popular “Living to Tell the Tale” Memoir Writing Class.

Meldon Jenkins-Jones

Meldon Jenkins-Jones is the Richmond Public Library / Community Services Manager at Hull Street Branch Library. 

Meldon also chairs the Get Lit Advisory Committee which supports the Richmond Public Library Get Lit Reading Initiatives including the Black Male Emergent Readers (BMER) program and the Lit Chicks Read book clubs.

Meldon is a graduate of the Leadership Metro Richmond Class of 2022. She was the first recipient of the Virginia Library Association (VLA) Librarians of Color Forum Award in 2021 and is an active member of VLA. She presented “Libraries Bringing Community Together” at the 2023 VLA Annual Conference.

In 2011, Meldon received her Master of Library and Information Studies from Florida State University. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers University School of Law—Newark and practiced law in New Jersey until her retirement in 2003. Meldon received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where she studied African American Studies and Russian Civilization.

A Metro Richmond resident, Meldon is the mother of two adult children and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.
