JOHN MUIR was born in Scotland in 1838, and emigrated to America at the age of eleven. In the years that followed, his   reverence for nature and uncompromising integrity played a vital role in awakening the American public to the need to protect wilderness areas for all to enjoy. He co-founded the Sierra Club, and is honored today as the father of the U.S. National Park system.

Laurie Battle was born and raised in John Muir’s backyard in the San Francisco Bay Area. She spent twenty-five years as the Director of Licensing for Tolkien Enterprises in Berkeley, where she oversaw the merchandise and stage licensing for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. A lifelong environmental and anti-war activist, she now lives in Virginia.
