Hidden in Plain Sight - A Black History Play

"Hidden In Plain Sight" is the latest Black History play written and directed by Richmond local Remmie Chew Jr—the Grio. Performed by the Prime Time Players Theater Troupe, "Hidden in Plain Sight" reveals the little-known history of the "house slaves" and their crucial role in the Union Army winning the Civil War.
The Play is set during the last days of the Civil War at the time of the final battles of Petersburg and the fall of Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy. The heroes are the house slaves and the freed slaves who worked in the houses of the Confederate Army leadership and the wealthy Richmond families. The slaves were thought to be unable to read, write, or understand the conversations going on around the dinner tables or at the Socials of Richmond's elite. "Just house slaves," is what the Confederates thought. At these social gatherings, the slaves overheard vital information about war strategies and secretly took this important information to the Union Army officers. The slaves were seen and not seen by their owners. They also had spy connections with the USCT, the United States Colored Troops. Some scholars believe that the valuable intelligence the slaves provided was crucial to the Union Army's victory and the end of Slavery.
Remmie Chew Jr. and the Prime Time Players Theater Troupe performed “A Rosa Parks Legacy” at Hull Street Library in 2025 to a multi-generational audience, providing a truly educational, enlightening, and entertaining evening for all.
