Echoes of History: A Walking Tour of Richmond’s Enslaved Past

Echoes of History: A Walking Tour of Richmond’s Enslaved Past

Join us for a guided walk along a modified route of Richmond’s Slave Trail, starting at Great Shiplock Park and traveling north of the James River. This 2.32-mile loop will take us through some of the most significant sites in Richmond’s history, including the location of Libby Prison, the former tobacco and auction houses, Lumpkin’s Jail, the Winfree Cottage, the Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground, and the where the U.S. Colored Troops arrived after the Burning of Richmond. Along the way, we’ll explore the stories and struggles of those who were enslaved in the area and reflect on how these sites have shaped Richmond’s present. Please wear comfortable shoes and plan for the 2.32-mile round trip.

Meeting Location: Great Shiplock Park (2803 Dock St., Richmond, VA 23223). Please note, this walk is not starting at the Main Library.
