Hispanic Heritage Month: Make Your Own Papel Picado
Papel picado, or "cut paper," has been made in Mexico for thousands of years and can even be traced back to the Aztecs! It's made from punching holes or cutting beautiful designs into paper. The paper is often then put onto banners and used as decoration for festivals like Dia de Muertos. The most common designs are flowers, birds, skulls, and the faces of historic figures.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins September 15th and ends October 15th. To celebrate, stop by the Children's Area at Belmont anytime during opening hours to try your hand at making your own. Supplies (scissors, tissue paper, crayons) will be available along with instructions and templates. When you're finished, take your finished product home or donate it to the library to be added to our Hispanic Heritage Month Display.
